HAL source code released

Good news, everyone: Atheros made the source code of the HAL available under the ISC license. This means the source can now be used by any open source project, including ath5k, to learn more about how to talk to the Atheros WLAN chipsets. The announcement, which also links to the source code, can be found here.

We appreciate this step and congratulate Atheros for their decision. It will help to advance ath5k further, first patches based on findings from the HAL source have already been published.

It might be worth mentioning that the HAL Atheros has released the source for differs from the HAL versions we use in MadWifi, and thus is no drop-in replacement. In theory it should be possible to integrate the HAL and thus make MadWifi a fully open-source driver. However, in the light of recent discussions and the amount of work required for such a step, it seems questionable if it will happen. It's likely that this will be subject of discussions in the madwifi-devel list.
