Creating a Station Mode Interface

This document does not apply to "old" (pre November 2005) versions of MadWifi.

SVN snapshots more recent than r1407 will create a sta interface per device by default (station, Managed mode). The following advice is only applicable for mode changes to a VAP (ie: you'll have a sta interface already unless you've chosen not to). Please see here for more details about the autocreate feature.

To create an interface (called ath0) in station mode (aka. Managed mode), issue the command:

wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta

wlanconfig ath create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta

The only difference is the lack of '0' in the second command. The kernel will give the interface the lowest free integer as its suffix.

This will create a station mode interface which will inherit the MAC address of the base device, wifi0.

You can then use ath0 as you would any other normal wireless interface. wlanconfig is documented in it's man page, wlanconfig(8).

One STA VAP limit

From the Users-Guide: Only one station VAP can exist on a device. If the station VAP is the first VAP created, then no other VAPs are allowed to be created. If the first VAP created is in AP (Master) mode, then one station VAP is allowed to be created. In this case, other AP VAPs can also be created after the station VAP.
