Unable To have multiple active AP with d-link DWL G520

Description

First case : the working one

Chip atheros minipci in a latitude laptop (AR5213) / card from ebay Madwifi 0.92 - Mandriva linux 2006 - kernel 2.6.12.25 Creation of 3 AP. The 3 AP are simultaneously seen as active from a distant machine running netstumbler

Second case : the one that should be working

Chip Atheros, Pci card in a whatever desktop PC, d-link DWL G520 (AR5213) Madwifi 0.92 - Mandriva linux 2006 - kernel 2.6.12.25 Creation of two AP. essid "ein" on ath0 and essid "zwei" on ath1 Only one seen in netstumbler. Only "ein" is seen by netstumbler. If I 'wlanconfig ath0 destroy', the "zwei" AP pops alive in netstumbler. The two interfaces show up in iwconfig, everything is correct.

Tried : * Different canals for "ein" and "zwei": no change * -bsssid : "ein" disappears, replaced by "zwei" on the same line when I destroy ath0, because they obviously share the same mac * ad-hoc, but adhoc does not work (wlanconfig does not allow 'wlanmode adhoc')

To be tried : * Madwifi flavour provided by dlink * Previous madwifi version * CVS madwifi version

Problem : I was really willing to have an open Ap for people (and Nabaztag), and another WPA'ed for providing access to "private people" (i.e. : my computers on more than web ports). So am I stuck with buying another atheros card that would support multiple AP?

I can not reproduce the problem here with MadWifi 0.9.2. I've just set up two AP VAPs, one running without encryption, once running with WPA using hostapd. Both show up on a WinXP client, which uses the Atheros client utility for scanning available networks.

Maybe the issue is related to Netstumbler. Can you please try something else to scan for the APs?

Different canals for "ein" and "zwei": no change

Setting the VAPs on different channels does not work at all when having only one WLAN card, since they share the same parent and thus the same (single) physical radio.

I confirmed the "netstumbler" reports with the WinXP SP2 built-in client (orinoco pcmcia card). I also confirmed the report with the latitude running mandriva linux (atheros minipci).

(netstumbler is just a bit more friendly, refreshes constantly and makes noise on status change)

I could not reproduce the problem either with my lattitude (atheros minipci inside) : It works flawlessly with 3 simultaneous AP successfully created and running. The d-link seems to bear only one at a time "on air", but reporting two interfaces in iwconfig and ifconfig...

I will not bother anymore changing the channel : they'll both run on eleven.

As I don't plan to use my latitude as a wifi server, I'd prefer the pci D-link DWL G520 card to work.

So, to summarize: it works now for you?

errr... No.

I have trouble setting two Access Points on a desktop PC with a d-link DWL G520 PCI card (atheros 5213 chipset).

Trying to reproduce the issue on a laptop equipped with a noname atheros 5213 minipci card, it worked (3 simultaneously active AP successfully created).

Both systems run the very same distro, same kernel, same updates.

So I think the issue is related to the D-link DWL G520.

BTW, I tried unsucessufully the SVC (r1732 ?) Madwifi on the desktop (with the d-link pci card), same behavior plus random kernel panic.

Many thanks
