another txpower problem

Hello Today i insert 3 cm9 wistron cards to my ap with madwifi-ng-r1497 + txpower.patch and:

  • 802.11b max power 18dbm
  • 802.11g max power 18dbm
  • 802.11a max power 17dbm

So my config:

Hey, sorry to respond so late,

are you trying to let us know that the txpower is lower in 11b mode than in 11g ? or outdoor=0 xchanmode=0 is changing things ?

I'm a little confused on what the actual problem is, if you can clarify, that'll be great.

Yes when i set card to 802.11g then i can set 20dbm(100mW) with countrycode set to poland or germany. In 802.11b i can set txpower to 16dBm(39 mW) whith the same countrycode set.

But if i load driver without countrycode param. then i can set txpower to max 19dbm in 11g mode and 11b mode. Something with setting countrycode...

The card shouldn't go above 18dBm, I wonder if this map is wrong or the one in the driver is ? In either case, I don't think I can fix this. Probably, someone needs to talk to the atheros people ?

As response to the "why" in the initiating description: the allowed maximum TX power always depends on country regulations. This includes stuff like "indoor vs. outdoor usage", since some countries apply distinct rules to both use cases.

Re the "11g allows more power than 11b": that indeed looks strange. I think this should be discussed with Atheros.

The list is not correct. At least for germany, we are allow to use 1W (yes not mW) on some channels outside buildings. I will make a updated list for germany.

That is 1W EIRP, which includes the loss by cable attenuation and the win of the antenna, for example. No Atheros card I know of is capable of providing 1W TX power, so I'm not sure what an updated list will help here.
