Description (Last modified by mrenzmann)

Hi i hope i'm in the right section, i write this cause i'm totally diperated.

yesterday i was triyng to install kismet and aircrack i had done these step:

installing build-essential
installing aircrack-ng
installing kismet
installing airsnort(not founded but pretty sure is in aircrack pack)
installing linux-source
installing linux-header(he ask to me whic i wanted to istall so i done "uname -a" to find my kernel version and then installed the propred headers.)

installing sharutils.

all seem ok but i read that i need to patch my Network controller:

Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01) (result of lspci)

after this i went to linux wireless site to download drivers. i have downloaded both stable version and bleeding edge, even the madwifi pack.. but for all of those packets when i uncompress it and from terminal i run make it end whit the same arror as always: error2.

i paste the error here:

/home/acid_burn/Scaricati/madwifi-0.9.4/ath/if_ath.c:9926: error: 'struct net_device' has no member named 'priv'
/home/acid_burn/Scaricati/madwifi-0.9.4/ath/if_ath.c:9928: error: 'struct net_device' has no member named 'open'
make[3]: *** [/home/acid_burn/Scaricati/madwifi-0.9.4/ath/if_ath.o] Error 1
make[2]: *** [/home/acid_burn/Scaricati/madwifi-0.9.4/ath] Error 2
make[1]: *** [_module_/home/acid_burn/Scaricati/madwifi-0.9.4] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.31-14-generic'
make: *** [modules] Error 2

the error is not complete i will paste all if needed cause is a little long..

another thing, when i run kismet they give me this error:

Launching kismet_server: //usr/bin/kismet_server
Suid priv-dropping disabled. This may not be secure.
No specific sources given to be enabled, all will be enabled.
Non-RFMon VAPs will be destroyed on multi-vap interfaces (ie, madwifi-ng)
Enabling channel hopping.
Enabling channel splitting.
FATAL: Unknown capture source type 'source=ath5k' in source 'source=ath5k,wlan0,atheros'
Done.

i changed source=ath5k,wlan0,atheros whit a bilion of things but still not work..

Hope someone can aid me cause i think is something stupid i do not done...

last question: i think the kismet error it depend on the fact that i do not changed my wireless driver, is this true?or is the source the problem?

my kernel now is 2.6.31-14generic release. regardles(hope is right written :P).

Paolo.

  • status changed from new to closed.
  • resolution set to invalid.
  • description changed.
  • v0.9.4 is not compatible with kernel 2.6.31. Use a snapshot of the 0.9.4 branch instead.
  • v0.9.4 (neither the release, nor a 0.9.4-branch snapshot) does not support AR928x chipsets
  • MadWifi != ath5k
  • all this stuff != defect, thus this is no valid bug report.

Please contact our regular support channels for further help. Thanks.

No, this is not a invalid bug! I'm using ubuntu v10.10 and I can not install Madwifi to put the card in monitor mode.

Model: AR5B97 (Atheros) = ath9k Even inserting the module "ath_pci" Do not start kismet and the board are not going to monitor mode.

I have the same problem!
