Freeze randomly only when in university (many >100 aps at any time)

Reported by: Assigned to:
Priority: critical Milestone:
Component: madwifi: driver Version: v0.9.3.1
Keywords: freeze many accespoints Cc:
Patch is attached: 0 Pending:

my notebook freezes randomly when i am in the university. i suppose its because of the many accespoints there (about 100 visible for the computer). turning off backgroundscanning does not help.

sometimes it takes about 30 minutes, sometimes i freezes directly after boot.

at home or something else there is no problem.

i am using opensuse 10.2, kernel, knetworkmanager, toshiba portege r200

no kernel oops message when freezing (xconsole does not show any).

when i do iwlist scan after about 5 scan i get disconnected after the 3rd disconnect the computer freezes.

i am now testing ndiswrapper.

back again. i tried to trigger the freeze by executing "iwlist ath2 scan" and it freezes again, but only when i am connected to the network. without beeing connected it seems to work.

while i was testing i got sometimes these messages on the xconsole (random order and time)

Jun 7 17:15:12 computer dhclient: wifi0: unknown hardware address type 801
Jun 7 17:16:25 computer ifdown: Interface not available and no configuration found.
Jun 7 17:16:42 computer kernel: wifi0: rx FIFO overrun; resetting
Jun 7 17:16:42 computer kernel: wifi0: ath_reset: unable to reset hardware: 'Hardware didn't respond as expected' (HAL status 3)
Jun 7 17:18:24 computer kernel: wifi0: ath_chan_set: unable to reset channel 3 (2422 MHz) flags 0xc0 '' (HAL status 0)
Jun 7 17:19:55 computer dhclient: could not restore resolv.conf: No such file or directory

ndiswrapper seems to work right now - any idea what to do?

i made about 20 reconnects but it does not freeze

my suggestion is, that it must be something with the scanning!?

I have observed a similar behaviour on a system with a Elitegroup K7VZA mainboard, the last available BIOS upgrade having be applied.

The booting process says: kernel: DMI not present or invalid. kernel: ACPI: no DMI BIOS year, acpi=force is required to enable ACPI

When the "acpi=force" has been enabled, the systems freeze not so often as when this option is not enabled.

The mentionned freeze does not only occurs while scanning, but also on normal station operation mode.

I had exactly same issue with >150 accesspoints. Drivers I used were v0.9.3.1 and v0.9.3.2.

When I use "trunk" version of the driver the workstation never freezes. I compiled revision 2712 and it has been on test for a month now. Also roaming is a lot smoother than earlier :).
